GKES COMPETES IN OM WORLD FINALS

Geilenkirchen Elementary School’s Odyssey of the Mind team finished in the top 25 during the 31st Odyssey of the Mind World Finals, May 26 to 29 in East Lansing, MI, home of Michigan State University. Over 800 teams from all over the world competed in this creative problem-solving competition.

For more than 20 years, Geilenkirchen Elementary School (GKES) and the Katho-lische Grundschule in Teveren, Germany (near GK NATO Airbase) have shared an annual joint study trip.


Jazzercise puts cancer survivors “back in the swing,” raises charity funds

Imagine this: you’ve just fought a deadly disease and won. Now, how do you regain strength and stay healthy?

Margaret Jensen, a breast cancer survivor, attends Jazzercise class twice a week at the JFC Brunssum gym and walks 60 minutes a day for exercise. During her cancer treatments, Margaret experienced periods of fatigue, but with a gradual exercise routine, her stamina slowly returned.

Lower Lands Knight Tourney – Aug. 21 & 22

Schutterspark in Brunssum is the scene of a real knights tourney where knights from Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands compete for the “Knight Bex” trophy. Visitors step back in time to the middle ages, a time of honor and pride when knights rode high on their noble horses and fought for the the woman of their heart. Event also includes a knight camp, medieval market, crafts, jugglers, magicians, falconry shows, horses, childrens games and lots more. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free entry.


Museums offer free summer admission to military families

The American Association of Museums, in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Blue Star Families organization is offering free admission to various museums across the United States this summer for active duty military personnel and their immediate families.
