Being a mom can have its share of ups and downs. Just ask any mother who has felt the warm and loving embrace of their child and the experience of temper tantrums of a two year-old while shopping at the commissary.

While most moms readily share their good experiences, it is quite easy for some moms to feel isolated when a not so good experience occurs.

Now imagine a support system of mothers and “seasoned veteran” moms with whom you can share similar experiences—both the good and the not so good.
Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) at Geilenkirchen Air Base, Germany is one organization that offers mothers an opportunity to share their parenting experiences, as well as receive spiritual and emotional support from more than 50 members.

Mother of two year old Aidan and eight month old Gavin, Vanessa Carroll is readily familiar with the program, having attended MOPS while stationed with husband Patrick at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. “Tonight’s my first night,” Vanessa said, attending the October MOPS meeting with son Aidan.

While attending MOPS gives Aidan a chance to socialize, play and make friends Carroll said, “It is also about other mothers going through the same thing; you aren’t the only one.”

Member Terri Patten, mother of three year old Jenna and four year old Jolie, said she initially attended MOPS to offer her support to a friend. However, she realized that she could share her experience as a young mom with other moms facing similar experiences.

Patten said, “As a young mom, I thought I could and should do it all by myself. I did manage to do it all, but I realize now that it doesn’t have to be that way. I encourage young moms to seek and accept help from their peers in MOPS.”

Raquel O’Farrell, mother of three year old Katelyn and six month old Hailey, said she attends MOPS “to meet other mothers.” A member for over a year, O’Farrell said, “I get information on schools, where to go shopping, and my daughter can come to play with other kids.”

As a stay-at-home mom, O’Farrell said she appreciates the time to meet other mothers and do the arts and crafts that are a regular part of meetings.
