For some people, this triggers a decrease in energy, which occurs primarily during winter months, October through March. The decreased energy may also cause difficulty concentrating or focusing on tasks.
Things that once were interesting and pleasurable activities no longer bring fulfillment. Some people find that they need more sleep during this season. These are all signs of the “winter blues,” also known by its scientific name of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
SAD is a mood disorder in which people, who have normal mental health throughout most of the year, experience depressive symptoms in the winter. But the good news is that SAD is easily overcome with simple lifestyle changes, like increasing your exposure to natural light.
The sky may be grey,but there is sun light on even the greyest of days. Roll up your sleeves and expose your arms to the natural sunlight. As little as ten minutes a day will make a difference. The Geilenkirchen Mental Health Clinic also has specialized lighting designed specifically for this purpose. Call or stop by the clinic to take advantage of this service.
It also helps to take care of yourself by eating a balanced diet, exercising daily and gettingadequate rest each night. The GK Health and Wellness Center, along with the fitness centers at GK, Schinnen and JFC Brunssum, all have convenient hours and are open for your use, free of charge.
Another way to combat SAD is to increase time spent with your family and friends. Now is not the time to hibernate alone. Develop relationships that are supportive.
If the winter blues affect your life and activities, you may need to seek outside help, which is readily available from any of the following sources: Militiary Family Life Consultants at GK, 0049-152-2421-0455;
